As a Canadian who has not yet received his new disks, I must say that I
AGREE that you other Canadians, who also have received no disks, are being
extremely childish about this whole deal.  THere is no need for all this
whining.  Gravis has told us we will receive the disks, and we will.
In the meantime, I am sure every one of you has the new "Gravis" software
i.e. GM patch set, etc.  The only things you are missing are a couple of
"composer" programs.  I doubt many of you will seriously use these (I will,
but I'm not complaining).  For those who have developed a keen and sudden
interest in midi composition, why not check out WinJammer; not a bad program
at all, and it supports patch cacheing.  If you're really keen go out and
buy a midi keyboard; you'll need one to seriously do midi.

For those not interested in composition, what are you complaining about, saying
Gravis is doing a crappy job, etc.  Gravis, in case you didn't notice, has
put a ton of effort into such things as SBOS and more recently AIL.  These are
things that, frankly, they didn't have to do.  They already have our money.
We complain about incompatibility in SBOS; they improve it.  We talk about a
GMOS; they give us AIL.  THis is all to earn our good will (and that of
prospective customers, of course).  Well, in my case they have earned my
support.

I think those who say Gravis isn't doing a bang-up job should go home, crawl
underneath a rock, and re-evaluate their priorities (or re-prioritize their
values; either one would do).

alt.gravis.complain - LOOK. How the heck are we suppose to track
packages that were mailed?  Have you ever tried to trace an envelope you
mailed?

A) TRUE: One thing we will not do again is, mail canadian packages
through the states.  Instead they will all be trucked up here and mailed
from Canada. It seems the canadian packages spent 2+weeks in the US mail
system and then x days/weeks in customs.

B) I will NOT scan/persue/study EVERY request from everyone to find out
where their package is.  Yes, I have been kind enough to look people up
in the dbase and have even got a third computer hooked up at my desk at
work JUST to do this.

C) You can read Eric Bell's msg about why we don't post these disks
online

D) How can the postal system trace bulk mail?

E) Send the disks out again? You'll probably get your first pack before
your second one.

YES, I know you all want your disks, and I would LOVE nothing more
than for all of you to have your disks by now. Heaven knows it would
save you and me time.

Yes, the icon thing has been fixed and some special notes about using
Power Chords added to the README file. Sorry about the screw up, but no
one picked up on it until after it shipped.  But isn't that always the
way.  Even after it was installed at least 100 times ;-)

It seems as though I'm about the only one who's having serious trouble
downloading from epas - most people can download files with few or no
troubles, but not me.  It's probably due to the time I'm doing it, or phases
of the moon, or biorhythms or something.

For those of you who asked, the actual problem I'm getting is that the
download just hangs any time during the download (generally I receive 1k-50k
of a file, then it just falls over).  Yes I am using binary mode, and the
same procedure works fine to all other ftp servers I access regularly (quite
a few).

No problem now - I downloaded several large files from archive.orst.edu
today without a single problem.  Thanks to whoever was involved in setting up
this site (I've got the names, but not at my fingertips).

Just 2 more questions before I go home to try out 2.06:
- Are the AIL drivers anywhere on archive.orst.edu?  I couldn't find them...
- Are there any PD/shareware games that use the AIL drivers?  All the tested
ones seem to be "normal" software (what's the term for non-PD/shareware?)

i received my GUS for christmas and sent in the registration card within a
week.  in february i took the order form for GUS upgrades that was floating
around this mailing list, marked that i wanted the Power Chords/Midisoft
software and 3 x the 256K memory upgrade (for the full 1 Meg) and sent
Gravis a check for around $45 dollars.  during march/april, we were then
informed by John Smith that the software i had ordered would be included
with the GUS software upgrade disks.  i thought, "ok, cool, now maybe i'll
hear something about the order i placed" since i would be due a refund if
in fact they sent me the software.  in the beginning of may, i receive a
letter from gravis and my check & order form with the software offer x'ed
out and informed of the new amount i must send them to receive the memory
upgrade.  i do that as soon as possible, and even though the letter states
"we're sorry this is late; thank you for your patience" a wait time of 3
months is completely unprofessional when it comes to a fast-paced industry
like computer software.

i haven't received the Memory Upgrade i (re-)ordered nor have i received
the GUS disks.  if i was on the original mailing of the disks, they are to
go to my old address (the Memory upgrade will also), which i monitor and
have filled out a change-of-address card for.  this wait has been a total
pain in the ass.  the delays, regardless of whether they are caused by
Gravis or Canada Post, are unacceptable.  i'm sure Gravis is confident all
people whom they mailed the disks to will get them eventually, or they
probably would have gone through the trouble to put up a serial-number
recognizing gate for receiving the upgrade software that Steph described.
and to whoever said "it has been established that the majority of the
people who were mailed the disks have received them," that doesn't make me
feel any differently about the fact that i haven't received PROMISED
software from Gravis.  in fact, it makes me feel bad.  i'm not bothering to
ftp the software minus the Making music stuff, because i only play 2 games
with my GUS, and i wanted it mainly to make music!

oh, and to whom it concerns, i changed my address with Gravis via Tech
Support two weeks after i moved.

Anybody know if you can change an instrument into one of the drums (Ie.
Snare) in MIDISoft? I don't have the option for those patches. They only
go up to 127 or something.

I read all upgrade disks for Europe were shipped, from Holland if I remember
well.  I wonder if someone in Belgium has received those disks (we were
supposed to send registration cards to Logitech Switzerland).  I am quite
certain that parcels post from Holland to Belgium VERY rarely exceed a week
delay, let alone a month or more.

How could we check if we are really registered (don't tell me about inter-
continental calls to Canada). John Smith, any suggestion?

Hello there, some people and myself are developing a new game
and we are looking for some sound routines (preferably source)
... Ideally the routines would support play back of .MIDs/.MODs
on  an SB, SB Pro, PC Squeaker, of course the GUS and any
other sound devices couldn't hurt :).  If you know of any
routines which might be helpful please let me know by

Hearing that Origin and EA will not be supporting the GUS, evenm
though they appear to recognise that it is a superior product
to most existing soundstandards, makes me wonder about
possible "deals" being done in the industry.
Creative labs have a lot to lose by Gravis becoming a standard,
and Creative Labs *have* got a deal going with Microsoft.
Are the games companies being paid NOT to support the GUS?
Are CL the culprits?
I wonder...

Why don't you use the -c option?  This will get rid of all the patch
caching pauses in the game.

Ultramid needs 64k upper memory to load high (I think) and takes up
56k once resident.  Try to load ultramid BEFORE your mouse driver.

I can't access Epas via archive.epas.utoronto.ca.  I have to use
its IP address, which is 128.100.160.36.

GUSAIL97.ZIP and GUSAIL10.ZIP both unzipped fine for me (I haven't
downloaded DUNE2AIL.ZIP).  Are you using binary mode for the transfer?

My disks are more likely held up at the border by Customs than floating
in Lake Superior.  :)
